Preliminary Work

The initial work, using the new techniques, was done at New Mexico State University in a pilot study on the use of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, LIBS, in the analysis of the complex silicate minerals classed as beryl. The raw data produced by LIBS was processed by a system developed at NMSU called the Beryl Experimental Analysis Matching System, BEAMS, which is a comprehensive set of MATLAB codes that allows the user to test multiple combinations with little effort. MATLAB (a registered trademark of The MathWorks, Inc.) is a widely used high-level language for technical computing. NMSU now holds rights to BEAMS
